Caring for Applied Finishes

Caring for Applied Finishes and Decorative Lacquer on Real Brass

It is important to remember that these are finishes that are hand applied and sit on the surface of the brass. A wide range of techniques are used in these preparations to achieve the desired colour and feel of the finish. Some are matt and others can have a high sheen or polish.

Our range of applied finishes on brass include:

DBMA (Dark Bronze Metal Antique), IBMA (Imitation Bronze Metal Antique), Antique Nickel, Zero Black

For these finishes it is important, where possible, to order your furniture in from the same batch, as colours can vary between each batch made.

Because of how these finishes are achieved, they are not suitable for High Use areas, Coastal areas or Commercial environments – please contact us to talk your situation through.

How will my furniture age?

These finishes are not designed to continue to age. The finish completely encases the brass underneath and will usually be finished with a lacquer to protect it.

It is important to continue to protect your furniture to prolong the life of the finish.

Regular Care

We recommend occasional cleaning with warm, mild soapy water with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Then give it a good wipe over with a lint free cloth to dry and reveal the soft finish.

You may need to do this 3 – 4 times per year.

Never use any form of cleaning agent or metal polish as this will remove the applied finish.

Protection

To help protect your finish against the elements and surface damage, we do recommend that you treat it with an application of a good quality wax polish. We tend to use Beeswax and a soft, lint free cloth. You could also use a good quality spray wax furniture polish or 3 in 1 oil.

You may wish to do this every couple of months.

Caring for Applied Finishes and Lacquer on Real Bronze

It is important to remember that these are finishes that are hand applied and sit on the surface of the bronze. We have a wide range of Applied Finishes on Real Bronze that use different techniques in bronze finish preparation to achieve very different looks.

These are: - Aged Bronze, Dark Bronze, Polished Bronze

Each product will have a slightly different look and feel and the finish will wear and age differently depending upon its style, location and how often it is handled.

Because of how these finishes are achieved, some may not be suitable for Coastal areas or Commercial environments – please contact us to talk your situation through.

How will my furniture age?

Your furniture has already been treated to give it an aged, antiqued or distressed finish, but it will, with touch, time and the environment continue to age and settle in.

With day to day handling and wear raised areas will be highlighted and begin to reveal the solid bronze below. This bronze is Unlacquered so as it oxidises it will begin to develop its own rich patina, adding to the aged appearance of your furniture.

Note: Aged Bronze and Polished Bronze by From the Anvil has been treated with a special lacquer over the top - this means it should be treated the same as Lacquered Brass and Bronze - it will not age and in time the lacquer will wear - these products are not suitable for Coastal environments.

Caring for Antique Nickel Furniture

Antique Nickel and Distressed Nickel are ‘Nickel Plated’ finishes that have been ‘Aged’ to look old or distressed. We only supply Nickel that has been plated over superior grade solid brass. This ensures that this finish looks great and will last far longer than the cheaper alternatives on the market.

Our range of Antique Nickel includes:

Antique Nickel, Distressed Antique Nickel, Antique Silver, Hand Burnished Nickel and Aged Nickel

Because of how these finishes are achieved, they are not suitable for High Use areas, Coastal areas or Commercial environments – please contact us to talk through your situation.

Nickel finishes are generally quite low maintenance, but the finish does benefit from occasional cleaning with warm, mild soapy water and a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Then give it a good wipe over with a lint free cloth to dry.
