Cleaning and Caring for Nickel and Chrome Furniture
Nickel and Chrome are ‘Plated’ finishes. Almost all of the Nickel and Chrome we supply has been plated over superior grade solid brass. This ensures that this finish looks great and will last far longer than the cheaper alternatives on the market.
Our range of Nickel and Chrome finishes include:
Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Pearl Nickel, Polished Chrome (Chrome Plate) and Satin Chrome
Note: Nickel finishes are considered 'Living' they will oxidise over time like silver, so will require polishing as well as cleaning to maintain their lustre.
Regular Care
Nickel and Chrome are generally quite low maintenance, but the finish does benefit from occasional cleaning with warm, mild soapy water and a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Then give it a good wipe over with a lint free cloth to dry - it is important to do this quite quickly to prevent water marks from forming.
You may need to do this every couple of months.
Never use any form of abrasive cleaning agent as this can remove the plated finish
Cleaning
Plated finishes are quite robust, but deposits do accumulate over time, especially on external fittings, so may need a clean.
Start by washing, as described above. Once dry you should use a good quality metal polish – we use Silvo wadding – and a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth. If you are using a liquid or cream polish, please apply this sparingly, you can always go back for another round if need be.
Once you are happy with the clean, make sure you remove all traces of the metal polish with a separate lint free cloth. We tend to use an e-cloth or similar for this part of the cleaning process, as it removes the polish and smears too!
Protection
If you live in an area with harsh atmospheric conditions, or in a Coastal area then you may wish to wipe it with a lightly oiled rag from time to time.
